On September 12th, the One Race Global Film Foundation, in partnership with co-sponsor FUNGLODE (the Global Foundation for Democracy & Development), launched its first In-School Program at the Mauricio Baez Cultural Center in the Dominican Republic. The two day workshop was a crash course in video production for eight students from grades 7-12, as well as four teachers who were trained with the idea that they would implement and supervise media education for more students at Mauricio Baez. Divided into three crews of four, the students developed, shot, and edited their own newscasts within the course of a single day. Over the next few months, the students and teachers of Mauricio Baez, located in the impoverished neighborhood of Villa Juana, will create more newscasts that will broadcast on the web and be accessible to their school, their community, and the world. Throughout the next year, the ORF team will return to provide additional training in film and video production in order to strengthen the foundation established in this highly successful pilot program.

The goal of the In-School Program is to teach the fundamentals of production to students who otherwise would not have the resources or equipment to find their voice, to enhance concepts such as critical thinking and writing, and to develop a passion for filmmaking at an early age that can later be cultivated into a strong workforce for the Dominican film industry.
